An individual’s safety is ultimately up to them! With that in mind performers should be aware that it is their responsibility to secure a safety spotter. Safety First! For anyone that needs a refresher or is new to the community here is a list of the commonly accepted practices at an event such as Fire Drums.

Safety Guidelines

  • 1. No smoking or open flames in the fuel depot or fuel storage areas.

  • 2. It is the performer's responsibility to obtain a safety spotter. Do not spin fire with out a safety.

  • 3. If you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, for the safety of yourself and others do not use fire, but feel free to spin unlit.

  • 4. Keep ALL fuel in the designated Fuel Dump area. Do your part to keep things organized by placing fuel not actively being used into the metal storage containers and keep the fueling station and spin off area clear and free of personal equipment.

  • 5. Do not alter or use another performers personal fuel mixture without express consent. Public dip cans for lamp oil, white gas, and 50/50 will be available. A mixture area will be set aside for containers clearly labeled as special fuel.

  • 6. Recommended fuels are white gas(Coleman or Crown brand) and lamp oil (Lamplighter farms). We do not allow the use of Methanol, Pump Gas (Petrol), or Diesel at firedrums for health and safety reasons. Isopropyl and denatured alcohols, as well as other specialty fuels are allowed, but must be clearly marked and stored in safe and appropriate containers.

  • 7. Consult with the fuel depot manager before using any unusual fuel, especially fuels with colorants. You are expected to be knowledgeable about your unusual fuels, and we would be happy if you provide a MSDS. Fuel depot managers have the final say in use of fuel.

  • 8. Check and tighten equipment prior to fueling up to prevent unwanted flaming projectiles. Another performers tools may be used only upon express consent.

  • 9. Wear only fire-appropriate clothing, we recommend cottons, silks, leathers, hemps, or aramid fibers. Additionally be aware of any cosmetic or hair product that may be flammable.

  • 10. Use the provided spin out cans or spin out infrastructure to remove excess fuel. On-fire spinouts are not expressly prohibited, but discouraged.

In summary:
Clean up after yourself, be respectful of others and others needs for space. Be responsible for the consequences of your actions, and respect the decisions of the organizers, even if you disagree with them.

We will not be exhibiting any propane fueled flame effects this year, if you are interested in such things, we can talk about more appropriate venues and the potential of brining them back in the future.

FIREDRUMS needs you! Sign up for Fire Safety!

While everyone at FireDrums is responsible for their own safety by having a designated spotter, there are additional SAFETY VOLUNTEERS on duty helping to ensure the safety of the event as a whole. If you would like to volunteer please check out the calendar for open safety shifts: volunteer!

Then send an email with the desired slot, your name, and phone number to firesafety@firedrums.org. To see the late night shifts in "week" view scroll up to the top of the calendar page (May 1st-4th).

In addition, before helping out, each volunteer must join us for one of the FIRE SAFETY MEETINGS held at the fuel dump every day at sundown (approx. 7PM).

Please Note: This is a volunteer position. You still need a ticket to attend FireDrums!

Since the above mentioned list is by no means a complete fire safety guide, refer to the fire safety links for additional resources. If you would like to do something “special” please ask! Sam Reese and Peter Youngmeister will be available throughout the event. Something special would be described as anything out of the ordinary. “Norm” tools include: poi, staff, fans, hula hoop, meteor, devil stick, rope dart, rope, eating/transferbr /eathing torches, palm torches, and clubs. If your tool wasn't mentioned then it's considered special & a safety consultation is requested.

Should you have any questions or would like to volunteer as a fire safety personnel please contact us at firesafety@firedrums.org
